DIY Pest Control Home Remedies That Work

When it comes to taking care of unwanted pests many people think it is going to cost them a fortune. Paying for pesticides, traps, and even a pest control company can all add up. The simple truth is that sometimes you can take care of your pest problem with home remedies that don’t have to cost you a thing.

Garden Insect Spray

You can create your own insect spray with garlic and mint. A few garlic cloves mixed with some mint leaves in a food processor along with a little cayenne pepper and dishwasher detergent will create the ultimate concoction. You should bring these ingredients together with some water to a boil.

We have heard this works best when you let it sit overnight before using it. The next morning you should put the concoction into a spray bottle. Take it out to the garden and get spraying. These ingredients are perfect as they won’t affect the health of your plants, but they will get rid of those unwanted garden pests.

Coffee Be Gone

Although it’s tough to find a human being that doesn’t love the taste of coffee when it comes to the insect world they can actually die from it. Coffee is fatal to ants specifically. If you see these invaders coming in your home, simply take some used coffee grounds to that area.

Sugar Kills Ants

Another great home remedy for dealing with these unwanted pests is sugar. This is toxic to them. We encourage you to make a mixture of one-half cup of sugar, one cup warm water, and two tablespoons of borax. Set this mixture in the line of where the ants enter your home. You’ll lead them right into a death trap and ensure these pests get out of your home.

Dust Mite Repellent

Dust mites can be extremely hard to find. These are microscopic and usually cause an individual to break out. You can always contact a pest control company, such as the one at, to help you identify if you have this pest or not.

If you do have dust mites, there are some scents they particularly hate. These include lavender, peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus, and clove. Mix some of these essential oil scents into a spray bottle and spray it on areas where you don’t want the dust mites to be.

ACV Fruit Fly Traps

Fruit flies can be pesky little creatures as they seem to multiply at alarming rates. If you have ever left out some fresh fruit in your home, it’s likely you have dealt with these pests. You can get rid of them within a couple of days by using an apple cider vinegar trap.

You want to use a bottle or container that has a funnel at the top. This will allow the flys to get in, but will drastically reduce their ability to get out. Fill the bottom of the bottle with the vinegar and some fresh pieces of fruit. This will keep them out of your home.
